La qualificazione alla Champions League, Europa League e Conference League per le squadre di Premier League è più complessa del previsto, influenzata da piazzamenti in campionato, coppe nazionali e risultati europei.

Premier League's Champions League Spots: It's Complicated

Think the top four Premier League teams automatically snag Champions League spots? Think again. It's not that simple.

Navigating the qualification paths for the Champions League, Europa League, and Conference League involves understanding various criteria. This includes league position and domestic cup results.

Right.

How many teams qualify for the Champions League from the Premier League?

Typically, four Premier League teams earn a Champions League spot based on their league finish.

Last season saw five Premier League teams secure Champions League qualification through their league standing. Those teams were Liverpool, Arsenal, Manchester City, Chelsea, and Newcastle United.

But here's where it gets interesting. The Champions League has switched to a new "Swiss model" system, expanding the competition from 32 to 36 teams.

Two of those extra slots are awarded to countries with the best collective record in European competitions that season. In six of the last eight seasons, England would have received an extra place using this method. And that was the case in 2024/25.

The numbers reset each season, though. Having six clubs in the Champions League could actually hurt the Premier League. Why? Because performances will be averaged across a whopping nine clubs in the three competitions.

Early signs point to the Premier League securing five Champions League places.

Okay.

How do Premier League teams qualify for the Europa League?

The Premier League is allocated two Europa League spots.

One goes to the highest-placed team that didn't qualify for the Champions League. Last season, that was Aston Villa. The other spot is awarded to the FA Cup winner, unless that team has already qualified for Europe through their league position.

Last year, Crystal Palace would have qualified as FA Cup winners. But they were replaced by Nottingham Forest due to multi-club ownership rules. Forest was next in line via their league position.

Next.

How do Premier League teams qualify for the Conference League?

The Premier League also gets one spot in the Europa Conference League.

The winners of the Carabao Cup initially receive a spot in the play-off stages for the Europa Conference League. However, Newcastle United had already qualified for the Champions League last season. Therefore, that Conference League place reverted to Nottingham Forest, who finished seventh in the Premier League. It then went to Crystal Palace, after Forest's promotion to the Europa League.

Essentially, qualification for the Champions League and Europa League can shift the Conference League allocation.

So, could Arsenal or Manchester City find themselves in the Conference League via the Carabao Cup?

Right.

Do the Europa League winners qualify for the Champions League?

Yes, winning the Europa League offers another route into the Champions League.

A team that wins the Europa League is guaranteed a Champions League spot the following season, regardless of their league finish. This rule change was designed to incentivize clubs to take the Europa League more seriously.

So, if Tottenham were to win the Europa League but finish outside the Premier League's top four, they would still qualify for the Champions League.

And.

Which Premier League teams are on course to qualify for Europe?

As things stand, Arsenal, Manchester City, Manchester United, Aston Villa, Chelsea, Liverpool and Brentford are potentially on track to qualify for either the Champions League, Europa League, or Conference League.
