Liverpool’s end-of-season review has concluded with the sacking of Arne Slot, but who should replace him as manager at Anfield?
Despite being declared one of the 2025/26 campaign’s biggest losers, it still seemed as though Slot would be given the summer and the start of next season to prove his worth.
But the Liverpool hierarchy have decided to part ways with the Dutchman after a presumably brutal internal assessment of a dreadful season.
So who precisely will replace him? They waited just long enough for Xabi Alonso to be taken out of the equation by Chelsea, leaving a diverse top 10 in the current betting to replace him might be, according to Oddschecker.
10) Steven Gerrard
No.
9) Simone Inzaghi
Currently at Al-Hilal but we know that Liverpool approached him when he was Inter Milan manager and they knew Jurgen Klopp was about to leave. We are not sure he would say no again.
8) Unai Emery
This one feels intriguing. He has wildly overachieved at Aston Villa but that job comes with its limitations. There’s no doubt that he deserves a shot at another big club…if he wants it.
7) Oliver Glasner
We know he’s leaving Palace in the summer and it seems entirely probable someone with deeper pockets and grander ambitions wants to see what he’s made of. The bloke certainly knows how to win things.
6) Pep Lijnders
Jurgen Klopp’s former assistant would be a huge risk after a disastrous spell with Red Bull Salzburg. Lijnders is leaving his role as Pep Guardiola’s right-hand man at Manchester City, but said he is doing so because “moving back to England is no longer an option”. Not sure sitting in the big chair changes that.
5) Julian Nagelsmann
The indications are that the Germany boss will return to club management after the World Cup and he has forever been linked with the Premier League.
4) Luis Enrique
“The obvious candidate if they can get him out, especially if they win the Champions League, I would be doing everything I can to get Luis Enrique,” said Danny Murphy earlier this month. “Because his team play the best football. It’s exactly the type of football fans want to see. What more can he do at PSG if they win the Champions League again?”
Win it a third time? The rumours do persist that the Spaniard would like another challenge and this version of Liverpool would certainly be that.
3) Jurgen Klopp
It’s the dream. And nobody wants to let go of a dream. Least of all us.
2) Sebastian Hoeness
The new Jurgen Klopp? While Stuttgart continue to overachieve in Germany, Hoeness will be linked with the biggest Premier League jobs.
1) Andoni Iraola
“One name that repeatedly comes up is Andoni Iraola. He’s potentially available, he plays an aggressive high-intensity style that fits Liverpool’s football identity, and crucially, he already understands the Premier League,” it says here.
Iraola was courting Crystal Palace and Chelsea but it had been suggested he was holding out for Liverpool to make their call on Slot. The Spaniard might have cracked it.
