We don't need numbers to know Chelsea should upgrade their goalkeeper, but here they are anyway. And they don't make good reading for Alisson...

Here, thanks to football analysis experts Gradient Sports, we present the best shotstoppers in the Premier League.

Across a vast range of metrics, Gradient grades every player out of 100, measuring execution and outcome to offer the most insightful and accurate view of individual performance.

This is especially useful when it comes to judging keepers, rather than assessing them on clean sheets or simple shots-saved percentage.

So, according to the grades, here are the Premier League stoppers (who have started a minimum of five matches) ranked for their shot-stopping prowess…

1) Emiliano Martinez (Aston Villa) 90

The Argentina keeper has had a somewhat erratic season so far but Martinez has still made more saves of a higher difficulty than anyone else.

2) David Raya (Arsenal) 88.4

Raya has climbed in this ranking, largely off the back of having the highest percentage for shots saved above expectation (30%).

3) Gianluigi Donnarumma (Manchester City) 86.6

Much to the disgust of James Trafford, Pep Guardiola changed tack completely and brought in a big guy to guard his goal. Donnarumma has the joint-lowest number of saveable goals conceded (5).

4) Martin Dubravka (Burnley) 85.2

Dubravka was an inspired summer signing and without him, Burnley would be further adrift. The 37-year-old has been the busiest keeper, facing 36 shots on target more than anyone else.

5) Alphonse Areola (West Ham) 83.2

Areola was one of the Hammers’ most-improved players before being surprisingly dropped. Nuno admitted one of the main reasons is he feels Mads Hermansen offers more in possession.

6) Jordan Pickford (Everton) 80.5

Pickford has conceded the second-highest number of saveable goals (15) but still England’s No.1 byt a long way and remains on course to win our save of the season.

7) Dean Henderson (Crystal Palace) 79.8

Henderson needed his best season yet if he hoped to dislodge Pickford in the England goal in time for the World Cup and his form seems to have improved. Which may be a consequence of being busier after Palace sold their captain and best defender.

8) Giorgi Mamardashvili (Liverpool) 78.4

The giant Georgian just scrapes in having played five games when Alisson was injured and Liverpool were caving in after a flying start. Apparently, half of the 10 goals Mamardashvili conceded were saveable, but he performed above expectation on a third of the shots he saved.

9) Guglielmo Vicario (Tottenham Hotspur) 78.2

Vicario has come in for plenty of stick, with many pundits hammering him for failing to keep out Dominik Szoboszlai’s free-kick at Anfield. You try saving that without a sight of the ball until it comes over the wall.

10) Bart Verbruggen (Brighton) 78.1

The Netherlands No.1 continues to catch eyes, with Bayern Munich and Tottenham both credited with an interest in the Seagulls stopper. Scrapes into the Premier League power rankings top 30.

11) Sam Johnstone (Wolves) 76.3

Dispatched back to the bench recently, which seems harsh, according to the numbers.

12) Aaron Ramsdale (Newcastle United) 76.0

Performed better than Pope but not to the point of convincing anyone that he should be the undisputed No.1.

13) Djordje Petrovic (Bournemouth) 74.3

Petrovic, like Bournemouth collectively, began the season well but had a major wobble at the back end of the 2025.

14) Senne Lammens (Manchester United) 73.6

Anything less chaotic than Andre Onana was always going to make a huge difference to United and Lammens has been a calming, reliable presence. A top-class keeper? We’ll see…

15) Matz Sels (Nottingham Forest) 73.4

A very mixed season for Sels after sharing the Golden Glove last term. Sean Dyche toyed with replacing the Belgian but Big John blew it. Could have lost his place to Stefan Ortega but Vitor Pereira chose to bring Sels back after a groin injury.

16) Caoimhin Kelleher (Brentford) 72.5

The Brentford stopper was conceding too many goals that perhaps he shouldn’t at the start of the season while settling into his first job as a No.1, but Kelleher looks more at ease in the role now.

17) Alisson (Liverpool) 69.7

Alisson is usually a rock-solid presence for Liverpool but the Brazilian, not long ago viewed by many as the world’s best, has struggled to stop the Reds’ rot. Might it be time to consider Mamardashvili as No.1 long term?

18) Karl Darlow (Leeds United) 69.3

May have felt aggrieved to give up the gloves when Lucas Perri returned but Darlow is rightfully back in the Leeds goal. Not because he’s demonstrably better, rather he’s certainly no worse.

19) Bernd Leno (Fulham) 68.4

There have been occasions this season when Leno was less than his usual reliable self, evidenced by the fact that no keeper has conceded more saveable goals (20).

20) Mads Hermansen (West Ham) 66.1

Hermansen was thrown in at the deep end at West Ham and struggled to keep his head above the water but his recent form after being recalled by Nuno has earned him a Denmark call-up.

21) Robert Sanchez (Chelsea) 65.6

Hasn’t been consistent enough to silence the doubters, and the fact Liam Rosenior admits he is asking Sanchez to do things that may be unfamiliar with suggests Chelsea will be looking for a new keeper in the summer. There’s a good one going free in Italy.

22) Robin Roefs (Sunderland) 64.7

Don’t shoot the messenger, Sunderland fans. We agree, Roefs has been superb.

23) Lucas Perri (Leeds United) 61.9

Initially taken out of the firing line because of injury, then dropped after a series of soft goals culminating in the latest-ever Premier League winner.

24) Jose Sa (Wolves) 61.0

Dropped, then restored to the Wolves XI, though this grade would suggest Sa’s presence and the team’s improvement is a coincidence.

25) Nick Pope (Newcastle United) 59.5

Held off the challenge of Ramsdale until recently but Pope’s form faltered at a bad time, with the loanee now in possession of the gloves.
